  • Christ House
    131 So. West Street, Alexandria. VA
    Provides emergency services for homeless individuals and families. Christ House was the first homeless shelter in the Northern Virginia area. The programs include a Soup Kitchen that serves nutritious hot meals seven days a week; a Thrift Store that distributes clothing to all in need; a Shelter that house men, women and children; rental assistance; emergency financial assistance, medical referrals.

    Volunteers Needed:
    Food Service; assist in serving food. Evening hours.
    Sorting; assist in sorting donated food. Weekend hours.

    Holiday Volunteers; Thanksgiving and Christmas assist in preparing and serving me

  • Carpenter’s Shelter
    930 N. Henry Street, Alexandria, VA
    Carpenter’s is an innovative provider of services to the homeless promoting lifelong self-reliance. Some of their programs include; aftercare, life skills and job readiness; children’s programs and family enrichment; substance abuse and mental health services; and transitional housing.

    Volunteers Needed:
    Children’s Program Volunteers; read w/the children, play games, create crafts every evening. During the school year, volunteers participate as tutors. Volunteers also participate in Saturday afternoon outings.

    David’s Place Volunteers; assist in the intake process, laundry services, coffee and snack set-up, answer phones. Weekday and weekend hours available.

    Front Desk Volunteers; greet residents and visitors, answer phones, accept donations, provide residents with needed supplies. All hours available.

    Hypothermia Volunteers; November to April (depending on weather) assist in the intake process. Evenings and Weekends.

    Job Mentoring Volunteers; assist residents with resumes, employment applications, job search skills and interviewing techniques. Saturday mornings only.

    Lawn Maintenance; maintain property including mowing the lawn, weeding, landscaping and snow removal. Flexible hours.

    Meal Volunteers; assist in food preparation. Noon and evening hours available.

    Seminar Leaders; conduct life and career skills training to enable residents to become more independent. Presentations include career planning, parenting skills, budgeting, etc. Flexible hours.

    Special Skills Volunteers; plumbers, electricians, accountants, lawyers, doctors, computer technicians. Flexible hours.
