Prison (Unshackled) Ministry’s goal is to provide a viable, effective, and practical ministry to the incarcerated that will focus on their spiritual development through spiritual renewal and formation. It is the ministry’s purpose to provide the incarcerated persons on the Christian block and others who are interested in a program that will further rehabilitate and prepare them for reentry back into society. This is accomplished through quarterly Sunday evening church services as well as small group Bible study by request.
As you may be aware, out of a total population of 1,976,019 incarcerated people in adult facilities, about 1,239,946 or 63% are black and/or Latino even though these two groups constitute only 25% of the national population, according to the 2000 Census.
SBC has undertaken to assist the formerly incarcerated and their families in an effort to enhance success of reentry is TurningPoint. This program was established in 2009, to assist the formerly incarcerated with reentry into the community. In addition to video visitations, TurningPoint will assist families by providing the Angle tree project for the children of the incarcerated, conducting family based Bible studies, offering skill-building classes, and assisting in obtaining job placement for those who are reentering society.
